Like for example, if it would connect to a regular tube TV from 2006. I'm thinking about smuggling a PS3 into Brazil during the world cup, if only to play GT6, but something tells me I'd have to buy a new TV to plug it in.

They came with a standard composite cable so will be fine.

There are some answers in here. Basically you just need a VGA HD/AV conversion cable.

The cable is the same as the PS2

The original PS3s (which I have), came with the standard rca cable that the PS2 came with. I've had my PS3 connected to a 27" Sony WEGA CRT tv before, and it worked just fine. The picture isn't quite as good as if it were on an HDTV with HDMI, but is better than PS2 console graphics. You can also get a cable with S-Video and RCA audio for the PS3 (same as the PS2 cable), if your TV supports S-Video.
I believe the slim and super slim are the same.

And PS1, for that matter.

I recommend skipping PS3 and all future PlayStation consoles. Fat PS3 is an overheating rubbish that won't stop annoying you with a "To Play This Game, Please Download This Latest PlayStation Firmware Update" message that pops up almost every two weeks. These updates only add more junk (non-deletable apps, ads, etc.) that slows down your PS3. Slim PS3 gets those annoying updates and it won't play old PS1 and PS2 games.
PS3 games aren't that great either.
PS1 and PS2 for the win.
Sincerely, frustrated former PS3 owner

To be honest, the only single reason why I want a PS3 is to play GT6. I'm not really planning on buying a new console, and I don't think there are any other games that I'd like to play on the PS4 or Xbox One that I can't get much cheaper on my crappy PC. If I can get a decent, used PS3 and a copy of GT6, I'll be set for a decade, seeing as how I still play GT2 and all.

composite (Yellow, White, Red) will work

I have owned a PS3 and an Xbox 360. I bought the Xbox just for Forza. I hoped after I had it a while I might find some other games that I couldn't play on PS3 that I would like. I did not. I still have the PS3 and have it just for GT6. I hope project cars is good because I would rather just play PC games any day.

Oh, ah, very well. If you want to have the same console for a decade, get the fat PS3. You never know if you will want to play PS1 and PS2 games, which are far more fun than PS3 and future games. Try to keep the console out of a confined space for better ventilation. I would recommend skipping all future "Firmware Updates" after installing the necessary update to play Gran Turismo 6.

Sounds like a plan to me :) PS2 games would be nice to have, though I've already been playing PSX games on emulators for ages

Old PS1 and PS2 games are becoming popular again due to the high costs of PS3 and PS4 games. $80 for a newly released PS3 game? No thanks. * remembers when new PS1/PS2 games cost $30 *

Heh, you don't have to tell me that... I've stayed out of the console market since the Gamecube era because the damn things became too expensive. Here in Brazil, the PS4 is still flying high at a 4 thousand bucks pricetag, and each game will set you back another 199 bucks, and that's mostly the same games you can get on Steam for 90 bucks less at launch, so... thanks, but no thanks.

Well, looks like you're set then. Remember: fat PS3, not slim. :)
